Better than local conditions, better than today

* TRCF (Total Reportable Case Frequency) is the number of total recordable cases multiplied by 1 million, divided by the number of exposure (working) hours in the last year.

The 2022 cycle of SQAS Transport and the CDI-MPC audits of locations continued with the successful delivery of both schemes in the audited offices & activities. All exceeded the target for the group of 90%, scoring 95% & 96% across the locations examined. By auditing our own offices and visiting and assessing critical locations, we are always exploring opportunities to improve our footprint on every element of SHEQ. “Better than local conditions, better than today” continues to be our benchmark.

Our new locations in Malaysia, Thailand, and Korea implemented “Basics of Office Safety” including “Emergency Response Protocols” in line and linked to the Den Hartogh framework. Safety audits and training were carried out as part of their SHEQ integration.

For Power of Safe, the central programme for our SHEQ cultural measurement and development, we undertook zero and phase 2 measurements in Singapore, Spain and Dubai. This is in addition to the Power of Safe improvement programmes in European locations. Walking the Talk was instigated to challenge our Senior Leadership team, but in 2022 was extended to include the regional management teams and thus embrace the next tier of leaders in the organisation.

Our Slip, Trips & Falls programme continued with the release of animations, poster campaigns and targeted briefings for all Drivers, Workshop Teams and Terminal Operatives. This was also cascaded through the office teams. Six Points of Safety for Trucking was developed with the European Trucking managers to give a consistent, clear and focused message on safety for our driver teams.

The Front-Line Leadership Programme for Safety Leadership supports our mentor drivers, senior mechanics and other front-line leaders in developing their safety leadership. We trained 14 new course facilitators and initiated programmes in the UK, France, Italy, Poland and the Netherlands. Toolbox Talk is a new programme for our own trucking involving 3 sets of toolbox talk sessions, physically reaching all drivers face to face across the European driver teams.

We kept developing our Safety, Health, Environment & Quality (SHEQ) culture, continuing the journey to zero major incidents and everyone going home safely at the end of the working day. We saw a downward trend in Total Recordable Case Frequencies (TRCF*), showing a significant reduction in the number of incidents. TRCF in 2022 was 6.42, down from 8.33 as recorded in 2021. This meant the absolute number of injuries categorised as TRCF cases fell by 26%, from 41 people being hurt to 30 in 2022.

We link this improvement to several initiatives focused on the interaction with our drivers and operators. After the relaxation of Covid measures, we intensified the face-to-face contact moments through driver forums, toolboxes and mentor driver sessions.
