“responding to the changing demands of a volatile market is in our DNA and this, in combination with our great team, makes me look forward with confidence.”

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to our Den Hartogh Annual Review, where you can find the highlights and key statistics of 2023. This year’s theme involved addressing challenges together – not only with our customers and partners, but with the entire Den Hartogh team.

The impact of geopolitical agendas and macro-economic headwinds in 2023 have resulted in global challenges. We started 2023 financially quite strong, but volumes were considerably lower than in 2022. The overcapacity in the market meant revenue started to come under pressure in the second half of the year.

High inflation and lower ocean freight rates have changed the cost dynamics in the industry. It is for this reason that we have continued developing our analytics, processes and global network design to consolidate our strong position as global logistics service provider, but also to enhance our cost-effectiveness and efficiency.

We are always committed to finding the most optimal logistics solution for our customers, which was reflected in our continued record low levels of customer complaints. It shows that our service level and communication were both performing optimally, a result of our conviction that the Den Hartogh team is the key to success.

We have held on to our strong position in the top 25% of the transportation industry when it comes to employee engagement. In 2023, our Your Voice Matters programme saw an increase in response rates, soaring from 61% to 81%. It is a clear illustration of its value and reinforces our dedication to fostering a positive workplace culture.

We continue unwaveringly in the market to identify and secure promising acquisition candidates, a vital aspect for financial growth. Our teams and IT capabilities have consistently demonstrated our ability to swiftly and effectively integrate these acquisitions, thereby creating value in the process.

A downturn in our financial results is expected to continue into the first half year of 2024, but a more favourable economic situation is forecasted for our industry in the second half. Fortunately, responding to the changing demands of a volatile market is in our DNA and this, in combination with our great team, makes me look forward to 2024 with confidence.
